We’re off and running! For the first time ever, the Apple Butter Festival is hitting the trails with the Apple Butter Festival Trail 5K, happening Sunday, October 11, 2026 at Cacapon Resort State Park.
Start your Sunday morning surrounded by the beauty of autumn in the West Virginia mountains as the course winds through Cacapon’s scenic wooded trails. Runners can expect a mix of forest paths, rolling terrain and gentle hills, with plenty of beautiful scenery along the way. Whether you’re chasing a personal best, looking for a fun new trail race, or just want to say you ran a 5K before spending the rest of the day at the Apple Butter Festival, we’d love to have you at our very first starting line!
The Apple Butter Festival Trail 5K is a professionally timed race in partnership with New River Timing Co., and every runner who crosses the finish line will receive a finisher medal.

One of our favorite things about this race might just be the timing. The 5K starts at 8:00 AM, giving runners plenty of time to cross the finish line, catch their breath and head downtown for the 51st Annual Apple Butter Festival, which opens at 10:00 AM.
And after running 3.1 miles through the woods, you’ve certainly earned whatever you decide to eat when you get there. Of course, we also think you’ve earned it if you came to cheer for someone, watched from a comfortable distance, or simply considered running and decided that sounded exhausting. We’re not here to police your Apple Butter Festival food choices!
